Welcome to the silly world of Biblical criticism.
This astonishing example of blind and lunatic faith is astonishing even for the insane world of human self-deception. This foul fowl is the ‘documentary hypothesis’. Rooted in the fevered imagination and ignorance of the “Higher Biblical Critics” and plagiarism of our friend Julius Graf-Wellhausen. The title says it all. “Let’s invent a hypothetical document” because we are too ignorant to understand the real one.
Atheist and Christian Perspectives on Torah Authority
For the atheist, it is sufficient to discredit the Torah and destroy its authority and then the fun is over. However the Church had to invest the Torah with enough validity to verify Christianity’s own messianic teachings, whilst simultaneously dismissing the Jews’ obduracy. Those who wished to promote Christianity were in a quandary because many passages of the Torah just make no sense without the Talmudic explanation. Yet, that very text was inaccessible because it required personal transmission and a key to its understanding. Anyway it was verboten.
Origins and Invention of the Documentary Hypothesis
Thus, another method had to be invented. The inability correctly to read, translate or interpret the Hebrew Torah, combined with this marketing need, spawned – ‘The Documentary Hypothesis’. Christians could not understand the time sequences and events depicted in the Old Testament. They still had to accept them and be ‘experts’ as their entire faith was broadly based upon this text. (Yes, yes, the Jews were very naughty and sacked etc etc – we all know that…) This was a highly esteemed school of pseudo- academic study created purely to hide an obvious lack of knowledge.
It held sway from the 1870s and is today still believed in by Jews eager for a quick-fix get-out clause and others who are ignorant of Real Judaism’s account. I know Jews who support Wicca because of it!! Now what would Wellhausen say about that?! Probably – “As long as you believe my utter nonsense – no prob. Dance in circles, hug trees and fornicate. After all that is what I did.” They should not read modern Christian scholars’ rejections of it or they will really be stranded. Like the originators who started this fantastical approach in the 1750s, today’s Wellhausenians are faced with so many contradictions and absurdities that they have to rely on remarkably complex cerebral gymnastics to hide their sad ignorance and beliefs. Academia has now utterly roasted them. But obviously, if it makes Wicca kosher – who cares about facts?
Unable to understand the text, they dismissed problematic sections of the Torah as simply caused by the (amazing utterly imaginary) loss of earlier (utterly imaginary) versions!
Losing The Invented Documents!
Yes, they invented documents and then said that they were ‘lost’!!!! These lost documents were ‘hypothetical’ and then hypothetically lost’. I could simply not get my head around this at first. I had to re-read it again and again. And remember I am a lawyer and a Jew and as underhand as anyone I know. Again, these ‘hypothetical documents’ had mysteriously never been referred to, known about, even hinted at by anyone anywhere and then – would you believe it? Oh dear – they were ‘lost’!
Further those very versions which answered their questions also happened to be just those which were strangely, somehow mislaid. Had we seen them then these ‘lost’ versions would have made everything blindingly clear – to the blind. This is the stunning ‘(carefully lost) document hypothesis’. This was made into their very own mythology – but even as a mythology it is as limited and myopic as Wicca. And what really bothered me was that these were honest, decent, believing Christians who seriously led upright and admirable lives and did enormous good.
Development of the Hypothesis
Now on to the stage strides one young, purely Aryan, German Bible ‘scholar’, Herr Professor Julius Graf-Wellhausen, who thought very well of himself. He felt that he was allowed to steal others’ ideas because he would have thought of them first, had he thought of them first. This man definitely should be described as a donkey. Fittingly, his major critic was Roger Norman Whybray (1980s) and one might well ask, ‘Why bray?’
Well, Wellhausen just did. He would have been an excellent Bottom in ‘Midsummernight’s Dream.’ Put out by his own obvious inability to explain the Old Testament, he plagiarized an amalgam of others’ versions of the magic lost documents idea – Astruc, Eichhorn and many others – and proudly put his name at the bottom. He proposed this and, this being academia, he thus became a household name and renowned Bible expert. And this sheer nonsense is the stunning ‘documentary hypothesis’. It answered all that which flummoxed the gentile experts whose Hebrew was limited and knowledge of the Talmud nil.
Why Biblical Critics Hate The Talmud?
The Talmud, remember, explains all the difficulties. Completely implausible, the ‘ theory’ would be screamingly funny if it was not tragically the reason given by many for not accepting Judaism. If this had not actually happened, it would be impossible to make it up. Christian clerics incredibly developed a presumption that anything inexplicable was not due to their ignorance. These brilliant charlatans’ stunning technique was actually to quote from non-existent (again utterly imaginary) versions – the A, B, or X ‘Manuscripts’ etc.
Yes, they would make up these bits themselves – themselves – and quote from them! It seems just unthinkable – but it is true. Their non-existent versions were actually called J, E, D and P. And we all thought that chutzpah was a Jewish invention! This is insane and therefore true. I can be so hyperbolic about the Hypothesis because the DNA results of the Yemenite Jews, new studies on the Samaritans, recent archaeology and honest Christian scholarship has blown it out of the sky. Yet it still holds firm in many a lunatic asylum and seminary and everything will be ignored by these darkened minds.
Modern Criticisms and Rejection of Biblical Criticism
It is still quoted by earnest seekers of an alternative to observance and few realize that it is based on openly dishonest, fraudulent invention, circular logic and wild imagination. There is not a minuscule shred of evidence for these ‘lost’ folios. They never existed nor could they have. Such Biblical Critics were lauded as the great academic Church ‘experts’ of Europe – often holding academic posts of the highest distinction. They reigned supreme. Many did not know a word of Hebrew – but worked from Latin and Greek mistranslations from a thousand years earlier!
Not only did they not consult the text, they could not. And they knew that they were safe. The establishment were behind them. No one really knew any Hebrew. Even today, dishonest Israeli ‘academics’, who know Hebrew, still earn their living by agreeing that these theories ‘could’ explain ‘perhaps’ some ‘problematic’ passages etc. And they parade as skull cap wearing Jews, often with a trim beard, in order to establish their credentials.
Reveling In Their Own Mirage
Well, you got to pick a pocket or two. This proves how supposition can create an entire mirage – and how real a mirage oasis can seem – especially when watered with lucre. Despite the benighted few, eventually the modern Christian world has had to admit that Biblical Criticism, the documentary hypothesis and all of Wellhausen was insanity driven by ignorance. Rather like that useful definition of a camel: a horse designed by a committee. But it has scarred million’s view of the Torah. People still confidently quote their ‘findings’ and speak of the ‘missing’ versions. Wellhausen is constantly quoted as the true description of the origins of the Torah.
Sounds impossible? This is exactly how the Bible Critics dealt with the so-called different names of The Almighty or any apparent difficulty they could not solve. The sheer brazenness of the system is mind-bending. Insanely, it is forgotten that the ‘earlier versions’ they invented were all imaginary. But we must kneel and accept all they say. Moses (or Abraham, or his donkey) was really Pharaoh, the Jews were hobbits and their mistranslations predict all they claim. I am not going to waste your time by continuing – as the entire world of honest Christian academia now openly accepts that Biblical Criticism was a load of bunkum.
However, it is an important object lesson. And they accuse us of going on about angels on pin heads. No angels here, just pin heads! Again, how can anyone go to the Talmud for advice if they believe such nonsense. But millions absolutely have swallowed these palpable lies. It is vital fully to dismiss such insane libels to impress upon the modern secular Jew the provenance of his mocked source of inner wisdom.
