What is this term “Plastic Judaism”?
It is the diluted Jewish ambiance which the finest, most honest, decent and admirable people I know think is ‘Judaism’. It is the equivalent of modern Christianity which entails for most an acceptance of a set of morals – excepting personal self-control – and a set of loose ‘values’. These change every few years but hover around being decent, tolerant and fair-minded. It allows us all to do good, whilst not necessarily being good.
This version is heart-rending in answering none of life’s questions in any depth, and warping easily when things get too hot. It is plastic. Sadly, this plastic version is what most have come to define as ‘Judaism’. It reduces our religion to a faith like all other faiths, rather than a judicially proven historical fact. It has stolen world Jewry’s heritage and duped them.
And, boy, have people been duped!
A Wake-Up Call for Modern Jews
Imagine picking up a product past its expiration date – it looks appealing but we do not buy it. That’s the essence of what I call “plastic Judaism.” This isn’t about judging individuals; it’s a stark warning about forms of Judaism that lack depth and sustainability. If its adherents jump ship after three generations or so, it is ethnic suicide. Comfortable, unchallenging, illogical and undemanding.
It encompasses all the accessible, flexible, but ultimately impermanent versions of Jewish life that dominate today. In contrast, Real Judaism – the organic, regenerative original – thrives in unpolluted spiritual ground, free from modern modifications.
We Critique the Belief System, Not the Believer
Let me be clear: some of the most admirable people I know are secular or non-observant Jews. Their lack of traditional observance doesn’t diminish their humanity or worth. Great qualities shine through regardless of religious engagement. This discussion isn’t about labeling “real Jews” or “plastic Jews” – that’s an anathema. Every person is precious, but the practices they follow might not sustain Jewish continuity. And that should be the concern of every Jew.
Atheists, Christians, and Muslims often critique Judaism targeting these plastic versions, unaware of the authentic and judicially proven roots of real Judaism. Large communities in Conservative, Reform, Progressive, and similar movements build vibrant synagogues with active members. Yet, once families relocate or milestones like Bar/Bat Mitzvahs pass, engagement often fades. Leaders in these groups have acknowledged this openly, framing it as a “matter of perspective.”
But from a survival standpoint, it’s a red flag!
The Survival Test: Why Plastic Judaism Guarantees Extinction
History proves it: diluted Judaism leads to assimilation and disappearance. How many descendants of Reform great-grandparents today identify with any form of Jewish life? They recoil from ritualized events – weddings, funerals, and coming-of-age ceremonies – reduced to meaningless platitudes.
Real Judaism, however, is self-propagating and inclusive. It welcomes every Jew, regardless of background, conversion status, appearance, or origins, as long as their life centers on studying the original and unchanged Torah, following its laws scrupulously, and embodying its teachings both in and out of the synagogue. This vibrant, hidden tradition regenerates across generations, ensuring Jewish survival amid global challenges.
Ditching the Kitsch: Moving Beyond Sentimental Ignorance
Sentimental myths from past generations – like pleas to “support Israel but live as you wish” – ring hollow today. Post-Holocaust guilt, Yiddish nostalgia, rich Jewish cuisine, and that empty exhaustion after Yom Kippur? These “treasured heirlooms” often alienate more than they attract. Modern, street-wise Jews have shed this baggage, but the result? A casual attitude toward intermarriage and cultural drift. The result, slow, but eventual ethnic suicide.
As a sensible secular Jew, you might feel content, but frankness is needed: this path leads to double extinction – spiritual and environmental. Kabbalah predicts this era ends around the Jewish year 6000 (about 215 years from now, as we’re in 5785). Interestingly, environmental experts echo this with warnings of planetary uninhabitability within 250 years. Meanwhile, non-observant Jews are vanishing demographically, outpaced by Orthodox growth and global population shifts in every single location, both inside and out of Israel. Within 4 generations there will hardly any secular Jews in Israel never mind outside. They will scarcely have any children – like all white Caucasians.
Rejecting Shoddy Goods: Embrace Authentic Judaism for Lasting Impact
You’ve been offered a wide variety of ‘Judaisms’ – Reform, Liberal, Progressive, Conservative, Reconstructionist, Humanist – but they’re historical mirages. If this insults, understand: this isn’t about your personal beliefs or “crazy Orthodox hypocrisy.” It’s about Judaism’s collective survival, not individual paths. Ask yourself, “Will my grandchildren even be Jewish?”
Your genuine attempts at Jewish life are valuable, but for a truly enduring heritage, Real Judaism is that which truly offers unmatched depth. It’s not about pressure to change; it’s an invitation to explore the regenerative core that has sustained and still sustains Jewish identity through millennia. Your unbroken, noble heritage!
